During the 2nd and 3rd trimesters float therapy is a brilliant way to relax in a weightless environment that gives a lovely sense of wellbeing and calm in pregnancy.
Standard float tanks contain approximately 500kg of Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salt) which will allow effortless floating in a shallow pool of water.
The water is heated to exactly the skin temperature of the body (35.5 deg C) and core body temperature will not rise. The water in the tank is also filtered to less than 20 microns, pH balanced and sanitised with a minimum of 2ppm of bromine for each float. High levels of salt concentration create a space that is free of pathogenic organisms. The tank is not airtight so plenty of oxygen can circulate and tanks are insulated against sound.
Most float centres will have tanks in individual private rooms, which include change room and shower facilities. Earplugs and neck rests can be used when floating to enhance comfort. You can float naked or in swimmers. Private rooms will have dim lights and music which will be turned down in the first few minutes of the float. When the float concludes, dim lights and gentle music will alert you to the end of the float. Lights and tank doors may be left open during the float if preferred. You are in control of your environment to promote the best float. The buoyancy of the water makes sinking an impossibility, so even if you fall asleep you will still be floating. The Epsom salt will not cause your skin to wrinkle when in the water for so long. After a shower, your hair and skin will feel silky smooth.
Most float sessions will last between 60 – 90 minutes.
